The World School Chess Tournament final begins at Expo 2020 Dubai

The World School Chess Tournament final begins at Expo 2020 Dubai

  • The face-to-face final of the World Chess Tournament begins next Thursday, November 25

  • The Spain Pavilion organizes this chess tournament with AC / E and Chess24, in which 283 teams from 54 countries have participated

The history of chess has a particular relevance for the Spain Pavilion of Expo Dubai, because it is also the story of the union of two cultures: Spanish and Arabic, since Arabic chess arrived in the European country in the 8th century. An example of this is the giant board located in the Glimpses exhibition area, along with several tables so that visitors are encouraged to play. Following this premise, the Pavilion organized a chess tournament that brings together teenagers from different countries of the world, reaching 2,600 chess players from 54 countries divided into 283 teams at the beginning of the first online phase. The finalist teams of the tournament can be consulted in the Chess section of the Spain Pavilion.

On Thursday 25, the face-to-face final of the Tournament will start at the Pavilion, and the winner will be chosen at the closing ceremony on Monday 29. In addition, the 108 teenagers who have made it to the finals – who will play in 12 teams divided into two groups of 6 – will meet on the 24th with the Norwegian World Champion Magnus Carlsen and his challenger, the Russian Ian Niepómniachi, and will have the chance to take a photo with them. Also the best female chess player in history Judit Polgar will visit the event to do the honour kickoff.

Inspired by the theme of Expo 2020 Dubai “Connect minds, build the future“, the goal of the tournament is to unite minds from different cultures of the world through a universal language like the chess game. This way, the Spain Pavilion also will talk about the topic of chess as an educational tool during the seminar on Education that co-organizes at Expo 2020 Dubai from December 14 to December 16.

The World School Chess Tournament in 2020 was managed through Acción Cultural Española (AC / E), the organizers of the Spain Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, together with the international online chess platform Chess24.
